I graduated from Salford University in 1983, coming back to Lancaster for my first rotational staff grade job. I moved to the Royal Preston Hospital in 1986 taking up my first Senior Out-patient job working in the busy treatment room.

I studied with the Orthopaedic Medicine International from 1984, graduating with the Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine in 1988. Toggle Complete Article

I was inspired by the late Dr James Cyriax, who was one of my course tutors at St. Thomas Hospital, London. I went on to develop the in-service training program for the out-patient staff, before being promoted to the Senior Clinician in the treatment room. During this time, I was fortunate to work in the orthopaedic clinic alongside Mr Roger Smith FRCS, who specialised in corrective spinal surgery for idiopathic scoliosis.

Having now developed a special interest in spinal pain I decided to train with the McKenzie Institute, completing their three module Diploma in Spinal Mechanical Therapy in 1989.

I started to work in the private sector in 1984, initially at Preston Grasshoppers RFC, and in 1985 was part of a three man consortium that founded Preston Physiotherapy Clinic, a self funding private Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, operating from within the Physiotherapy Department at the Royal Preston Hospital.

In 1989 I moved back to Lancaster, when I was appointed Physiotherapy Manager at the Nuffield Private Hospital, with a challenging brief to develop their new Physiotherapy Unit.

Having commissioned the new Physiotherapy Unit and watched it become a thriving department, I had the opportunity in 1993 to take over a very successful Physiotherapy Practice from the locally well known Shirley Rawlins, my former boss as a Staff Grade. She must have trained me well! At the same time, I maintained a part time Senior Post in the Spinal Treatment Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. As part of this job, I spent a year working as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedics, helping Mr Hugh Stewart FRCS sort out all his "difficult backs"!

While continuing to work part time in the NHS, I marketed my new practice and watched it steadily grow before inviting Iain to join me in late 1993. When Shirley sold her premises in 1997, we decided to relocate to York Bridge Surgery, where we worked closely with Dr Geoff Ingham and Dr Richard Routledge providing their in-house physiotherapy service during the days of GP fund holding, as well as our own private practice. The York Bridge Practice continues to flourish, though I now divide my time between York Bridge Surgery and my clinic in Hest Bank, having "retired" from the NHS in 2002.

In my spare time I enjoy mountain biking, sailing and canoeing and continue to enjoy playing the piano.

Grad. Dip. Phys., Grad. Dip. Injection Therapy

I graduated from West Middlesex Hospital, London, in 1980 and went on to complete a two year rotational Staff Grade post at Ealing General Hospital.

My first Senior level position was in Australia, where I worked in both Sydney and Adelaide. This was a great opportunity to experience how they do things "down under". Toggle More Information

On my return to the UK I worked at the Royal Preston Hospital in the physiotherapy outpatient department, where I went on to become the Outpatient Manager. During this time I studied for my Graduate Diploma in Advanced Spinal Manipulation, achieving full membership of the prestigious MACP (Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists) in 1985.

As a keen rugby player myself, it was a pleasure to be appointed Physiotherapist, along with Carol, to Preston Grasshoppers RFC in 1984. We provided a full clinic and match day service for twelve years before moving to Lancaster.

In 1985, Carol and I were part of a three man consortium that founded Preston Physiotherapy Clinic, a self funding private Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, operating from within the Physiotherapy Department at the Royal Preston Hospital.

I moved to Lancaster to commission a new Outpatient Physiotherapy Service at Owen Road GP Surgery, before taking on a new roll as Senior Physiotherapist in the Spinal Treatment Unit and doing two clinics as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedics. While in this post, I studied for the Diploma in Injection Therapy, which I was awarded in 2003.

I joined Carol working at Hest Bank Physiotherapy Clinic in 1992, and have worked there since, becoming full time from 2005 when I "retired" from the NHS.

I keep in shape with fell walking, mountain biking and sailing. In my spare time I enjoy playing the cornet with Morecambe Band, along with clarinet and saxophone with Carol and Georgina. If you would like any further information you can contact me via my e-mail - iain@hestbankphysiotherapy.co.uk.

During this time I spent two years working alongside Carol and Iain in the Spinal Treatment Unit, and also worked in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Gym working with many upper and lower limb fracture cases, upper and lower limb joint replacement and ACL reconstruction cases. I have worked in a specialised foot biomechanics clinic, and my current role is as one of the Senior Therapists in the Outpatient Department, with a specialist role in back pain working in the Spinal Pain Service along with a team of Consultant Anaesthetists. This involves treating complex chronic pain problems as well as acute problems.

I have experience in effectively treating a wide variety of conditions using many techniques including manipulation, acupuncture and exercise therapy.

Having worked with Carol and Iain at the Royal Lancaster Hospital since 2000, I was asked in 2005 to help them at the practice during periods of annual leave which I have really enjoyed. I am now looking forward to doing some more regular sessions at the Clinic over the coming years.

In my spare time, I like to keep fit by jogging, fell walking and aerobics.
